Ilfracombe Boat Trips: The Best Ways to Explore the North Devon Coast
There’s something special about standing on the harbour at Ilfracombe watching the boats come and go while the sea air rolls in from the Bristol Channel.
Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to experience a few incredible trips, including the famous MS Oldenburg, thrilling sea safaris, and relaxing coastal cruises aboard the Ilfracombe Princess.
One thing still sits firmly on my bucket list though — swimming with the seals at Lundy Island.
The Excitement of an Ilfracombe Sea Safari
If you enjoy adventure, wildlife, and a bit of adrenaline, then a trip with Ilfracombe Sea Safari is an absolute must.
The moment the engines fire up, you know you’re in for something exciting. Racing across the water with the North Devon coastline behind you is an experience on its own, but it gets even better once the wildlife starts appearing.
On my trip we had porpoise following the boat and spotted seals lounging on the rocks and plenty of sea birds circling overhead. The dramatic cliffs around the coastline looked even more impressive from the sea. There’s always that feeling that something amazing could suddenly appear beside the boat at any moment.
A Slower Pace on the Ilfracombe Princess
Not every trip needs speed and adventure though, and that’s exactly what we love about the Ilfracombe Princess.
There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about sitting on deck, gently cruising along the coastline while taking in the views of hidden coves, cliffs, and sea caves. It’s the kind of trip where you can properly relax and simply enjoy being out on the water.
We found it perfect for taking photos, enjoying the fresh sea air, and appreciating just how beautiful this coastline really is.
Visiting Lundy Island on the MS Oldenburg
Travelling aboard the MS Oldenburg to Lundy Island is one of those trips that felt like a real adventure from start to finish.
As the island slowly comes into view across the Bristol Channel, there’s this amazing sense of escape — like you’re heading somewhere completely removed from everyday life.
The crossing itself is part of the experience. Standing out on deck watching the coastline disappear behind you while seabirds glide overhead makes the journey feel just as memorable as arriving on the island.
Once on Lundy, everything slows down. The rugged cliffs, peaceful walking trails, wildlife, and quiet atmosphere make it feel wonderfully untouched. We have been several times and can recommend how to get the best from the island and still have time for lunch at the Marisco Tavern.
A Trip on the Last Ocean Going Paddle Steamer in the World
We are lucky to have the last ocean going paddle steamer in the World, the PS Waverley, visit Ilfracombe each year. For 2026, Waverley is scheduled to return to the Bristol Channel between late May and mid-June, with several sailings from Ilfracombe. The ship itself is a preserved 1940s paddle steamer and a major piece of maritime history. So if you are staying during this time do arrange a trip – you won’t be disappointed.
Still on My Bucket List – Swimming with the Seals
One experience I still haven’t done — but absolutely want to — is swimming with the seals at Lundy Island.
All of our guests who have done it say it’s an unforgettable experience. The idea of being in the water while curious grey seals swim around you sounds both magical and slightly surreal.
Several boat companies offer dedicated seal swim trips like Lundy Diving, Kittiwake Charters and Sea Swift, so be sure to book well in advance if you would like to experience this unforgettable adventure.
